*This is not a Democratic Event, but we are happy to advertise.

Progressive Movies is showing "Rich Media, Poor Democracy" at 7 PM at the Michael Servetus Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4505 East 18th Street, Vancouver, WA.

If the key indicator of the health of a democracy is the state of its journalism, the United States is in deep trouble. In Rich Media, Poor Democracy, Robert McChesney lays the blame for this state of affairs squarely at the doors of the corporate boardrooms of big media, which far from deliverying on their promises of more choice and diversity, have organized a system characterized by a lack of competition, homogenization of opion and formulaic programming.

Journalism has been compromised to produce a system of news that is high on sensationalism and low on information. Unless citizen activism can reclaim the commons, this new corporate system will be characterized by a rich media and an ever improverished, poor democracy.

Bring your own drinks and we'll supply the popcorn. We'll always have meaningful movies and occasional special presentations. Come and see those progressive documentaries you've always meant to. We start at 7:00 PM, but you're welcome to come early and stay late for great conversations with other like-minded people.
